Beatriz Porée will be standing for election as a Reform Jersey candidate for Deputy in the constituency of St Helier South.
Beatriz established the popular Market Juice Bar in the central market 6 years ago and has established a reputation as a hardworking and welcoming businessperson.
On why she has chosen to stand for election now, she said – “I am standing for election because I believe we need a fairer society that focuses on social and economic justice. I wish to see a society in Jersey where those who can afford the most care and support those on lower incomes.”
In particular, she is greatly concerned at the rising cost of living and the effect it is having on the wider economy. “The cost of housing in Jersey is a great contributor to poverty. As someone who has lived in rental accommodation for the majority of my time in Jersey, I feel that we need to develop better balanced rental regulations, both on private and social housing. This must be dealt with if Jersey is to keep a strong workforce necessary to ensure that the Island’s economy is supported.”
As a Portuguese citizen, originally from Angola, she is passionate about seeing the States of Jersey better reflect Jersey’s population. “Jersey’s population also has changed. We are now a much more diverse island. People from different cultural, racial and religious backgrounds are more of an active and integrated part of Jersey society. It is vital that the States Assembly and its members are representative and reflect the present diversity in the Island.”
“If elected I will strive to work with other Reform Jersey States Members to create a more equal society with a stronger sense of inclusivity. At a time when there is much economic uncertainty and the huge cost of living increases taking place it is more important than ever to look after those who earn the least.”
Party leader and fellow St Helier South candidate Sam Mézec said – “I am delighted to be running for election alongside Beatriz. Many people in St Helier will know her from her business in the market where she has a reputation for being friendly and welcoming. I know she is passionate about improving life for all people in Jersey, and her background in business will make her an effective States Members capable of helping to achieve a fairer Jersey.”
