Reform Jersey believes that the announcement by Jersey Gas that they will raise their prices by 6.5% on Friday, at a time when Jersey is going through the biggest public health crisis in a century and many islanders have seen a drop in their incomes, is totally unacceptable.
Jersey Gas had been in talks with the Government of Jersey to find a suitable arrangement for support to protect jobs and the service that many islanders rely on through this crisis, but has so far not provided the evidence that the Government has requested to demonstrate that support is genuinely necessary.
Reform Jersey calls on the Government to utilise the powers it has under article 89(1) of the Jersey Gas Company (Jersey) Law 1989 to reverse this planned rise in prices and force Jersey Gas to return to the table to discuss an appropriate support mechanism. We stand ready to lodge our own proposals to achieve this if necessary.
